if you want to warm up the light a bit, the easiest thing to do is to manually set the white balance on the camera. most point-and-shoots let you do this, and i'd suggest the "cloudy" setting. you can also purchase filters that warm up the lighting, which is what i do a lot. most decent camera stores will carry color gel filters -- look for a CTO ("color temperature orange ( ... )

Thanks for the info, man. I will definitely look into color gels.

When I asked a similar question to the camera store dudes, they produced this Big Ass Bag Thing (tm), that was about twice the size of the camera.

Can you give me more info on the slow sync thing? Is this something that comes normal on most cameras?

From my experience with my camera, it has a lot of "Dummy Mode" settings, and its harder to get to the Tweaks for Geeks.

i have a canon point-and-shoot, so i'm not sure how it works on nikons.

but slow sync is usually activated as one of the flash modes. i googled the nikon s4, and it looks like there is slow sync, but you'll have to check your manual for it.

slow sync works by popping the flash, but holding the shutter open long enough to let some of the ambient light fill in the exposure. the standard slow sync picture looks like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/splunkton/206364190/ ... or you can go more nuts and get weird effects: http://www.flickr.com/photos/splunkton/202679883/

i don't know anything about the big ass bag thing... i have an external flash for my camera, which sometimes bounce for nice soft lighting.

the alternative is to embrace the direct flash look and fuck with the white balance to get some interesting effects (that's what i usually do).
