Okay. Last night I went to see Zero 7 perform at Bumbershoot.
Zero 7 was the only band I saw yesterday. They were the only band I wanted to see yesterday. In fact, I took a cab to the fest at about 8pm. So I ended up paying 30$ to see them, outside, on a lawn.
And it was worth it.
They opened with You're My Flame, a playful upbeat song about love. Great tune - I secretly wish that some woman wrote the song about me. After that, they went into This Fine Social Scene. Not exactly how I would have opened, but okay.
I think the best part of the opening sequence was watching Sia dance. Her personal energy was on display - an energy I didnt quite expect. She danced like a free spirit - a child just inspired by the sounds in her ears. It was gorgeous.
They went on to play a bunch of songs from The Garden, which is quickly becoming my favorite CD of the year. They brought in Jose Gonzales for his songs (and I think to give Sia's voice a rest - that woman *sings*). They threw in some songs from their other albums. So there was a decent smattering of stuff to hear.
Later on they played Seeing Things. This is possibly my least favorite track from the album. But ... BUT! In the middle of the song, the keyboardist Eddie Stevens started doing a half-boogaloo behind the moog. Eventually this spilled out to center stage, and Stevens was just going to town. His attire and demeanor kinda made the dancing seem like a toned down version of the dance scene in Napolean Dynamite. So it was definitely amusing.
Throughout the set, they played most of my favorites. I was really exited to Pageant of the Bizarre (my second fave on the whole album). Sia did a wonderful job of throwing in some minor lyric/tonal changes to keep it fresh and interesting. However, I was severely bummed that they didnt play my favorite - Waiting to Die. God, I fucking love that song. As far as Im concerned, its an anthem for living life. I think *everyone* should listen to this song.
They did do an encore. It was the oddest encore I have ever seen in my entire life. Sia brought out Matt, the dancing fool from
WhereTheHellIsMatt.com fame. Sia made him dance with her during a break in the singing. They both did the Matt dance. It was awesome.
Another odd highlight of the show came from the audience. Sia just started into Somersault. Some hottie, about 5 feet from me yelled, "I love this fucking song!". It was heard by a few people in the audience, needless to say. But ... what most missed was that same hottie, shouting about a minute later, "God I love this fucking song. OH! I think Im gonna fuck myself!". Apparently she was excited.
So, yeah. Zero 7 was awesome. Why the fuck werent you there?
Eh? Not an excuse.
