The best powerplay is to find a position on another/better team and be willing and confident enough in your skills to bail. That's really your only true bargaining power. Otherwise you'll still be holding out your cap saying "Please sir, some more?" and secretly seething inside.
If you're looking for a promotion relying on people's good graces is sure to leave you disappointed. A manager's job is to keep his reports doing their job, and to keep them happy so they don't leave. Unfortunately most managers aren't really good at the proactive part and come up with the promotion/bonus when it's too late. I've seen very few managers that really get this, because most of the time they're running around giving status to other managers....
