The first time McGee is shot at, it isn’t at the hands of an enemy. He stands in front of the target in the firing range as Gibbs’s bullets land around him. Intellectually, he understands that it’s because Gibbs wants him to get used to being shot at; so that he doesn’t do, in the field, precisely what he’s doing right now, which is freezing up.
But that also means that he’s getting shot at, and there’s a little voice in his head reminding him that everyone makes mistakes.
A bullet lands directly next to his head. He flinches, he can’t help it; squeezes his eyes shut to keep himself from shouting at Gibbs to just stop.
When the fingers touch his chin, he starts. Gibbs simply moves his grasp to Tim’s neck, and carefully pins him to the wall. The kiss is warm, and damp, and like a dream.
