The Muse asks: If you could live anywhere, where would you and why?For many years I longed to live in a cottage with a garden overlooking the water, but I have found the dream and the reality of that life are far removed. Indeed, when I am on land I am happiest in my little observatory, looking sometimes at the stars, sometimes at the ships docking ( Read more... )

The cottage idea sounds quite lovely... That would be a fantastic place to live. I rode on a boat about a week or two agao. I enjoyed it...but I do think it would be interesting to live on one...I do remember almost losing my balance and almost toppling over on my friend, who you know as raining_cloud. It was quite a spectacular experience though:)

Many lubbers begin their sea-voyages with a knock on the head, ha, ha! I do hope that you will try it again.

If the chance happens upon me, I will indeed try again.

It's true that one doesn't really want to say anything bad about a ship one is in command of, even if it really is essentially a bucket of bolts (or, well, in your case a junk pile of waterlogged wood.)

Of course, then there's the cases of getting a great sailing ship with not enough weaponry.

...or the difficulties of having both ship and weaponry, but all the best hands drafted in port for a flagship.

*Furrows a brow slightly his expression curious.*

What is it like to sail? Where I'm from there is very little water except in the spring when it rains a little. I can't imagine what its like to be completly surrounded by water. It must be quite liberating...

What is it like? My dear fellow, you might just as well as a man what it is like to make love. Was you an Englishman I should take you to sea with me at once. Are you one of the travelers with the machines that can make different places appear around you? If you are, or if you know someone with one of those holo-suites as I think they are called, I hope that you will sail, and then tell me how you would describe the experience.

*Smirks slightly as he nods*

Yes you could say I'm one of those travellers...I personally don't have access to a holosuite at the moment. But I will definatly give it a try when i have the chance...

*Extends a hand to greet him*

I'm sorry I don't believe I caught your name, I'm Legate Damar.

*extends hand* Aubrey. Captain of H.M.S. Surprise. I do envy you, sir, the opportunity to travel at will to any place you wish. I have a particular friend whom I know would pay dearly to avail himself of the opportunity to see the species of distant shores, even if it was only a recreation.

In fact I daresay that my friend would be interested to speak with you; he is a physician, and I don't believe I have ever met anyone with your features. Is "Legate" a title? What crown do you serve?

I should like to sail one day? I can believe that it is quite amusing, considering that you love it. I trust your judgement, Captain.

If I was not so set against women on ships, I should offer to teach you to sail.

You know, Captain, the muse often seems to ask questions that I used to think about constantly when I was a young girl. The question of where I would most love to live was a large part of my musings (no pun intended). I dreamt up several places: a cabin in the woods surrounded by foliage and positioned on a lake with a waterfall nearby; someplace where there was always at least 4 or 5 inches of snow on the ground (I still adore taking a walk in falling snow, or of course the occasional snowball fight); a place made entirely of candies and chocolates (remember I was a child when I dreamt this). And now that the need to find a place to live is quickly approaching, I have no idea where my ideal location would be ( ... )

I have always found that women on a ship in the Navy cause a great deal of trouble, but of course there are passenger ships and the East India Company takes a very different view of women aboard.

But would it not be difficult to have a garden, in the woods or in the snow? I should think you might find yourself hungry!

I've never been good at tending gardens..that was always my mother's field of expertise. I hadn't thought much of what I would do for food when I was dreaming up these places. I suppose that would leave the place made entirely of candies and chocolates for me; I doubt I could go hungry there!
