Kids: don't buy a VW!
It's a pity, too, as there are so many nice-looking VWs. But everyone I know who's had one has had problems.

I don't care that much about the looks of the car but VW makes cars with quite a bit of leg room. Being a tall guy I bought a Passat because I fit in it easily without slouching and because it's supposed to be a well made German car. One of those things turned out to be false.
When I picked it up from the dealership yesterday I got there and a sales guy tried to chat me up when I parked in the customer parking spot thinking I was there to buy a car. I told him that I was only there to pick up my lemon, and that "I have a VW with an electrical problem. How rare is THAT? " He quickly tucked tail and snuck off.

I'm happy about the bike as well. I have a link to a couple of pictures of the it in my other journal grossklein.
We have a dog who will grow up to ~60 lbs and plans to have another kid or two, so we're looking at getting a Highlander Hybrid first and then a Prius as a second car when our Honda dies. The Honda is a year older and has 20K more miles than my VW lemon but has had zero problems.
Did you get to pick the color that you're getting or just go with first available. Here in CA there's a month+ waiting list for the Prius, possibly less if you don't care which color you get.
In 2007 Toyota is coming out with a "touring" edition Prius. When I was at the dealership last weekend looking, the guy said that Toyota was just about to announce it and he gave me a brand new sales brochure. The only differences I could find between the regular Prius and the Touring edition were the tires and the struts. Everything else listed was the same. odd...

Thanks for the very kind words :) I don't know if we'll be awesome parents, I hope we'll do our best and find the energy to keep trying to improve. I told my sister yesterday that we wouldn't screw our kids up the way our parents did us, that we'd find entirely new ways to mess up our own kids. She agreed.
I hope my kids are into something athletic. I'll definitely get them to try a bunch of different sports / arts / hobbies out to find things that they like and are good at. My parents never encouraged my sister and I to try anything, so we both have no artistic talent and started on sports later in life. The idea of being able to go running/biking/swimming/golfing/ing-ing/etc someday with my kid(s) sounds awesome.
