Ok, when talking to people here at ESPN, "hooking up" does not mean what I think it means. So I'm curious to get people's definitions of what constitutes "hooking up".
I always thought it was a generic term for any make-out activity that covers anything in the whole range of bases; politer than saying you banged someone or got to second base, but still kind of casual and popcorn-y.
You can also say that you hooked up with like, a second group of people after the restaurant and went to see a movie together, but this use is context-sensitive and gets overwritten with the presumption of Action if used in a "I, by myself, hooked up with an individual of my target gender for completely platonic purposes" kind of way.
If that doesn't line up with your definition, or the folks at ESPN, that's probably cause all of you are more socially proficient than I am :)
Gettin physical. Normally denoting casual and short term, but it could signify the start of something long term, but the hooking up would only apply to the initial makeouts/fuckings.
My main concern was whether it meant sex or not. To me, hooking up with someone means sex. It's used synonymously "making out" or "fooling around" in these here parts. I always though hooking up meant more...

1. to engage in a singular evening of sexual gratification with an acquaintance, with a presumption of "no strings attached" (preferred definition)
"She hooked up with Steve at the party last week, and then again last night when they ran into each other at the bar"
2. to begin an ongoing relationship with an acquaintance in which the outwardly presumed purpose is for sexual gratification (less common)
"He hooked up with Lisa, but I don't think they're going to last very long"
