This was written around the time I decided to app Harper, and after a conversation with Simon-mun about Harper hitting on his girlfriend. I was enabled to post it. A Harper-in-camp fic. With Simon and Kaylee.
“Shiny. Tell me more ‘bout how these slipstream drives of yours work.” Kaylee’s eyes sparkle and she leans in closer.
“The Harper is always happy to share his knowledge with an engineer as gorgeous as you. So how about we head down to a quiet corner of these labs I’ve heard about and compare our engines?” Harper chirps back happily, equal parts come on and literal suggestion.
“Well, I reckon my boyfriend ain’t gonna be too pleased with that.” Kaylee laughs.
Harper looks aggrieved, exaggeratedly proclaiming, “You wound me. I only have eyes for one woman, the seriously hot Rommie.” He pauses for a beat, “What’s he got that I don’t?”
“His fancy doctorin’ for one.”
“Hey. I had the entire All Systems’ Medical database in my head for a few days. Ok so it almost fried my brain and had Mr. I’m a big bad bounty hunter Jeger after my neurons but it’s gotta count for something!”
“Having knowledge doesn’t grant you the ability to use it.”
“Yeah, yeah. Knowledge isn’t wisdom. Already got that lecture from Rev.” Harper waves his hand dismissively then stops as Kaylee plants a kiss on Simon in greeting. “You’re dating this guy?”
Kaylee giggles, “Simon, meet the ‘genius’ engineer Seamus Harper. Harper, meet my boyfriend.”
Harper is decidedly unimpressed, “Seriously, what do you see in this guy? He’s so stiff and boring.”
“Well-”
Simon interrupts stiffly, “Kaylee, if you aren’t busy with this. . .” He eyes Harper’s spiked hair and overly bright clothing, “new acquaintance, I believe my automail needs adjusting.”
“Automail? What’s that?” Harper perks.
“My prosthesis.”
“Cyborg?”
“No. Now if you don’t mind-” Simon’s chilly exterior is disturbed for the barest second as Harper leaps forward.
“Hey, lemme have a look at it. Maybe I can help; I’ve got my tools right here.”
Simon retorts coolly, “I thought I was ‘boring.’”
Harper smirks, “We aren’t talking about you, we’re talking about your leg. Whole universe of difference right there.”
“And just what expertise do you have in the field of cybernetics?”
“Trust in the Harper. He is skilled in many things. I lovingly handcrafted a ships’ avatar from scratch. Well, nearly scratch; I used one of Andromeda’s maintenance androids as a base. If I have the specs I can build it.” At the blank looks he elaborates, “Completely lifelike body for the ship’s AI.”
“I would rather leave this in the hands of someone with experience-”
A few minutes later a disgruntled Simon stoically pretends that he isn’t sitting with Harper and Kaylee fussing over his metal leg, Harper rambling appreciatively and poking at things with small tools. “What a piece of workmanship. With a few tweaks and some custom ‘Harper original’ modifications I could have this beauty running like nothing you’ve ever seen.”
Simon is incredulous, “Seamus-”
“Harper.” The absent correction is accompanied by a little spark and Simon jumps. “Now isn’t that better?” He croons, not at Simon at all.
“. . . Yes.” Looking slightly miffed Simon continues, “Harper, are you. . . hitting on my leg?”
Harper’s grin is manic, “Well, it is a very well put together leg. Give me a nano-welder and a few parts and I can take off most of the weight and add on some realistic skin-”
“Oh god-”
“Why, yes, I certainly am.”
Simon’s look turns to one of mortification and Kaylee laughs.
