Well to be honest, some movies are just worth seeing in theatre. Most (not all) people cannot compare their home theatre systems with the massive screen and engulfing audio that real theatres supply. I don't know about the US, but in Canada regular movie tickets are now anywhere between $10 and $15. Matinees no longer exist in most theatres. Even with this ridiculous pricing and the current "economic slump", movie theatres up here are still pulling in major business. I tried to see Transformers: Rise of the Fallen five days after it's initial release in one of Vancouver's biggest theatres (at the ridiculous $15 per ticket), and we still had to miss two showings due to it being almost completely sold out

Renting means paying with money. When borrowing books and/or DVDs from the public library, all you need is a library card. All that you are required to do is to return the book and DVD at the due date. Failure to do so would result in a fine.
As for downloading? That will ultimately be an issue.
What about in places where there are no public libraries? Like, say, IN THE PHILIPPINES???
I hate to say it but you're also guilty about downloading. I might have introduced you to the concept but ultimately you have no one to blame but yourself if you download.
