The .gifs completely make this :D

You know, I have the same kind of attitude towards YA - occasionally, a good one comes along, but I am in general hugely prejudiced against the genre as a whole. So it's good to have someone else doing the crap-wading for me. This sounds like such a refreshingly different take and I can see why you're raving about it!

Also, camping out for gif. myth. ::puts up tent::

Hee! This was totally just an excuse to break out my immense folder of gifs.

There is just SO MUCH CRAP when it comes to YA that when I do find something that's actually worth reading, I want to shout about it and pimp it out so not everyone thinks YA is just Twilight and its 120482734 knockoffs.

female protagonists are completely average. Not too pretty, not too smart, not too anything. I think people think that by having generic heroines, it’s easier for female readers to identify with them?

I think you've hit the nail on the head - that way everyone can identify with them and we all "have hope" or whatever. If little miss plain whatsherface can get the awesome guy, we all can.

Man, I hate it though. And it doesn't even make sense - why would the awesome guy want to be with someone who is so freaking boring? Get it together, publishing industry!
