Two bangs just rang out over Leytonstone.

Echoed like they were bouncing off a wall 150 metres away.

Didn't sound like firecrackers. Unless these firecrackers were abnormally big.

Maybe they are bombing Leytonstone! :P

Probably were just very big fireworks, or perhaps a motorbike backfire.

Gunfire tends to make more of a cracking sound, and explosives go crump, though conceivably it could have been someone with a blunderbus. :)
