Who the fracking hell is Matt Smith? What next for the Dr, a baby?! Why oh why couldn't they have gone with Paterson Joseph?

This is all a Crash and Burn plot of Russell's, isn't it?

That makes it worse! *sobs* Pinch me, wake me up, and tell me that actually they cast Paterson Joseph, and not a Cbeebies presenter type.

...what are your thoughts on the casting?

He's a decade younger than me! :) I want my Dr to have authority, and convey a sense of a life lived over centuries - if this lad can do that fine. ...Also, and rather shallowly, I was getting used to a Dr that was easy on the eye. This new lad isn't :)

Yes, Paterson would have been ideal - or Chiwetel Ejiofor (the Operative, from "Serenity"). I liked the Operative character a lot: he seemed kind of philosophical, world-weary, like he'd gone through hell in the name of making a "better world" yet in the end he seemed to gain empathy too. He strikes me as the sort of person who like the Doctor could wipe out a species if the occasion demanded, the sort who's used to making hard choices - choices that haven't always gone well either.

This floppy haired, geeky sprog just doesn't seem anything like my idea of the Doctor.

Chiwetel would also have been a superb choice.
