Your mother is the only person of her age I can imagine who can still look somehow beautiful in a hospital gown.

I know you and she have had your share of difficulties, but you really are so lucky to have your mother -- especially at her age, and considering that she's remained largely lucid through all of this. Three out of my four grandparents ended up with dementia ranging from Alzheimer's to brain damage resulting from strokes, and it's so distressing to see someone you love in that condition. And this is hard enough, I know, but at least your mother can still speak for herself for the most part, and that should give you some measure of comfort. I'll be thinking of all three of you.

Watching this virtual progress of your mother makes me think so much of a woman I'm sort of distantly connected to. The woman that founded the art gallery I work for is getting progressivelysicker. But she's lived this incredible life- she was a model by the time she was 15, had a love affair with Sinatra when she was in high school, married one of the editors of French Vogue and lived in France, moved back to Los Angeles and started this art gallery in 1979. The saddest part of watching her slowly fade is the problem with communication- she is still there, she is still the funny sharp and petty woman we all knew- but the strokes have left her slur so bad that only two or three people can understand her ( ... )
