When I lived with my parents in northern NJ I got a highly directional FM antenna and actually tuned its length to 92.7 just so I could get WLIR. It was how I got my ideas for my college radio playlist; there really wasn't anybody in the Philly market playing synthpop at the time.
ObTrivia: in the version of New Order's "Confusion" that's on their compilation LP Substance / 1987, the beginning of the song contains a sample of the station ID with the call letters rearranged.
Of course, all this talk about "forward thinking" seems pretty inaccurate to me. New Wave and Alternative Rock were new genres back when I was in high school. It hasn't been "forward" for a decade or more...
