INTERLUDE

“Are you sure about this, Yuuji?” his father asked in his most gentle tone, ever the understanding one despite his other father declining exactly the minute he proposed the idea.

He nodded tensely, gaze still glued on both his father’s feet and fingers twisting against his companion’s own nervously. “I… I think this is the only way to… to help Yuuri,” he murmured, feeling another painful kick in the gut just thinking about his brother’s own gripping pain.

He didn’t want to hurt him, but it seemed like he always ending up taking that road whenever he did something without thinking first; he knew of his brother’s pain, he didn’t need to be a genius to figure that out because it’s been like since they were young. Yuuri stopped treating him like a brother for so long now, and he guessed it was partly his fault for not having the courage to bridge that gap and tell his brother how sorry he was.

“It’s not your fault, Yuuji,” his father mumbled solemnly, his voice sounding like he didn’t really want to say that out loud, but he had to; Yuuji kept his gaze downward, feeling his companion’s fingers rubbing soothing circles across the back of his palm before he felt himself being tugged sideways, and his companion’s little arms encircling around his waist. “…and Yuuri needs to understand that. He can’t just go and claim anyone as his, because we are all created in pairs - he didn’t need to force himself or force anyone who’s already destined to be with another because that would only break the balance….”

Shaking his tiny head, he looked up. “But what if - what if he was also destined to be with Taaka? Since we actually look a lot like each other…. What if, what if we’re meant to share Taaka and -“ he paused, his companion’s hold tightening around him as he froze.

“Y-Yuuji,”

“No, just hear me out, okay?” he muttered, wriggling out of his companion’s arms and facing him; “…me and my brother looks exactly the same, except maybe the color of our eyes, and a few things that could be fixed if we need to. And you - you know that you loved him first, before you met me… don’t you think there’s a possibility that you and him might -“

Blue shook his head, his eyes mirroring the sadness Yellow knew he was feeling. “Y-Yuuji, please,”

He gripped at Blue’s arms, shaking him slightly, his eyes pleading; “No Taaka, please just… c-can’t you at least, I don’t know, try? There’s nothing wrong if you would only check, right? I won’t be upset, I swear… just -“

Blue was still shaking his tiny head, hands capturing Yellow’s face in between his palms and leaning in to press his nose against the corners of Yellow’s mouth. “I already did, Yuuji,” he said lowly, apologetically, and Yellow stilled; “… I touched your brother’s hand but nothing happened, I’m sorry…”

One of his fathers’ hands landed on top of his tiny shoulders, his grip was strong and knowing; he looked up to see the pain written across his father’s eyes, some of it was because he knew they’re bound to let either one of them go if only to make the other’s life a little easier.

“Your similarity ends when Yuuri’s heart decided to hate you for being you, Yuuji. Your brother needs a lot of time to heal himself, and it’s probably for the best if you both aren’t here while he does that…”

“F-Father,” he croaked, fingers clinging against Blue’s arms.

“Go, Yuuji,” his fathers told them, the lights on their back shining brightly as they held out their hands, giving them the permission they were asking since earlier. “… take care of yourselves and be happy, and just come back when you’re both ready…”

Yellow wriggled out of Blue’s embrace, throwing his tiny self against his fathers’ arms, letting their love washed over him in waves of million, almost blinding lights.

“Goodbye…”

Chapter 9

“Yuuri!” a familiar voice shouted from somewhere and Blue quickly lifted his face up, whipping his head around at the darkness that still loomed over him. “ - let him go at once or I swear to our grandfathers’ graves, I’m going to make you regret ever coming here!”

Gold was quickly on Blue’s side and grabbed at Blue’s shoulder tightly, his golden eyes burning deeply in the shadows.

“Come and get him if you want him, dear brother… but let me make it clear to you that I’m not letting him go without a fight. I was stupid for giving him up to you then, but I’m not going to make the same mistake again. I love him too, probably even more than you do and if it’s what it takes to make him mine the way it was supposed to, then I’ll do it!”

Yellow emerged from the shadows just as Gold dragged Blue out of his corner, the lights on their backs were shining in yellow and blue fires.

He saw when Yellow lifted his left hand, at the same time Gold lifted his hand, fingers pointing at each other.

Blue screamed and with all the strength he could muster, he wriggled out of Gold’s hold and threw himself in between the two of them.

“Stop!”

Gold’s anger pounded through his veins, shifting his gaze between Blue and at his brother’s clear defensive stance, the two of them pointing at each other like they were each other’s greatest enemy. He couldn’t think, he couldn’t even allow himself the luxury of looking past the anger that was presently clouding his judgments, let alone pointedly admit that what they were doing was outright stupid. His brother looked equally torn between shoving Blue out of the way and keeping himself still while he waited for either of them to make the first move.

Blue looked fairly terrified, but was either too caught up in stopping them from killing each other that he had to stand in the way if only to make sure the two of them wasn’t going to start firing at each other at any given opportunity. But Gold had been waiting for this, and he wasn’t about to let Blue interfere to what he supposed had to be done the minute Yellow claimed Blue as his.

It still hurt like hell when he looked at them, like he was being ripped apart when he saw how Blue stared at his brother like he was the one and only reason why he was alive. It’s still a gripping realization whenever the thought of seeing the two of them wrapped around another like they’re one, because his heart still couldn’t accept the fact that Blue was meant for his brother, and not for him.

He didn’t care about the damn writings, about those silly legends their fathers and grandfathers used to find each other, because he believed in himself and he believed in what he felt when he met Blue. It didn’t matter if he wasn’t the one with whom the writing’s been referring to, all that mattered is he loved Blue then, and Blue loved him too.

At least that’s how it was before his brother had to come and ruined everything between him and Blue.

He didn’t know what Blue had seen on his brother that he didn’t see in him; they looked exactly the same, for goodness sake, so why would he turned his back on him when he had already planned their future together in his head?

It was supposed to be him, all of the things his brother luckily had in his tiny hands should have been reserved for him; Blue was his the moment he laid his eyes on him, loved Blue to the point where he’d learned to forget all the bitter things he had to endure for always being compared to Yellow, because the thought of finally finding that someone who would complete him, compliment him,  see him as someone who wasn’t just a mere shadow of his brother, but an entirely different being altogether, had made it easier for his heart to heal on its own.

And then Yellow had to come and steal that one thing that made him happy, the one thing he was sure was born to remove him from the miserable life he’d had till now, living behind his brother’s shadow for years; Yellow took everything from him, their fathers’ love, their grandfathers’ affection, the friends he met first and later on ended up adoring his brother and completely forgetting him as if he didn’t exist at all. And Yellow did it without even a second thought, without even bothering looking back and thinking how bloody miserable he would feel in the end.

Well then, everything had to end here, now. If he couldn’t take back what was rightfully his, then his brother should suffer the way he’s been suffering; he’d give Yellow this chance to experience how painful it was being him, by taking Blue away from him.

And he would do it by ending Blue’s life, even if it meant ending his own too.

He made a single step backwards, keeping his eyes on them and making sure he’s got the upper hand even with Yellow’s silver whip waving dangerously hot behind him; Yellow’s making sure he’s guarding the object of their affection carefully, the lights behind his brother’s back glowing brighter and brighter with each passing second.

Blue’s not even using his own powers, and he’s perfectly aware of that fact despite having his gaze fixed on both of them; a smug smile graced the corners of his lips just as he prepared himself to win this battle once and for all.

He saw Blue’s tiny mouth moved, mouthing something he couldn’t really decipher, not with all the anger throbbing hot inside him; but then his brother’s intense gaze softened visibly, looking miserably between him and at Blue’s shining back, and he was sure Blue had just said something under his breath that made his brother’s heart melt in a way only Blue knew how to do.

Eyes narrowing, he clenched his tiny fists and hissed, spitting an arrow-like fire straight into Blue’s direction and gasping when Blue simply stood there, eyes wide and determined and looking like he’s just waiting to be hit.

Gold’s arrow almost, almost hit Blue on the face and he swore he felt like his heart took a leap to his throat when his light was suddenly met with Yellow’s silver ones just before it strike Blue’s prone form, but still powerful enough to throw Blue out of the way until he ended up almost on the other side of the room, groaning painfully.

“Taaka!” his brother screamed, maddeningly loud and quickly whipping his silver light frantically, completely forgetting himself and simply allowing his emotions take over as his whip moved past Gold’s head, and Gold found himself ducking, side-stepping and barely escaping his brother’s whip with a hoarse, inaudible cry.

He made a dash towards Blue, his whole body shaking with so much adrenaline; Blue’s expression veered between pain and fear, hands held out as he called Yellow’s given name over and over. Gold felt himself snapped within seconds, left hand pointing at Yellow and the other free hand moving to grab and twisted Blue’s already broken arm.

Yellow then found himself suspended in mid-air, limbs stuck and frozen; Gold smirked at his brother’s obviously shocked expression, because it was clear that Yellow was surprised at Gold’s unbelievable strength. It’s been years, and Gold had been harnessing his powers since Blue and Yellow took off, leaving him with nothing but the desire to get even, to rebuild his pride that his brother and his lover heartlessly stomped upon.

Blue screamed in pain and Gold’s laughter filled the air; he’d stopped feeling altogether, and the fact that he’s finally getting his revenge across made this all the more sweeter;  his brother’s eyes wide and panicked as Blue’s eyes met his, pleading him to stop, to just let his brother go.

Gold shook his head and clicked his finger, still grinning hugely and then Yellow was suddenly writhing in pain, his body was slowly being bent backwards, his spine cracking at the awkward angle; Blue suddenly looked very much awake and began screaming Yellow’s name despite Gold’s firm hold around his broken arm.

“Let him go! Let him go!” Blue let out in a deep, long growl, eyes glowing red in what seemed like a combination of anger and frustration; he groaned once, slowly moving his legs and twisting around quickly. Gold didn’t even manage a half - snarl, half-groan, before Blue shifted his body to the right and used his other good hand, throwing Gold into the space where Yellow was still caught mid-air.

It took him merely a whole minute to get his bearings, growling under his breath before turning back, twisting his fingers and quickly sliding to the other side as his brother fell down with a sharp thud; he focused his attention to Blue this time, who’s surprisingly glowing with held back powers as Yellow writhed painfully on the floor.

“Yuuji!” Blue screamed yet again, his attention quickly darting towards Yellow and Gold used that opportunity to focus his energy on both his hands; Yellow cried sharply, his tiny chest heaving hard as Blue scrambled to his feet and looking like he wanted nothing but to throw himself at Yellow’s side and cradle Yellow to his chest.

He wasn’t able to, because not even a few steps forward, Gold was already throwing balls of golden bluish flames at Blue’s back, and Yellow’s screams got lost in between the sounds of Gold’s anguished yells and Blue’s own screams, calling out Yellow’s name.
