ZOMBIES There's a whole slew of Internet jokes and those urban legends. So, I'm always wary of anything I see forwarded, distributed, or spammed onwards to unsuspecting friends. Who knew that one day, one of these things would come true?
We started the day like every other. The cats were very calm and collected this morning, so we didn't suspect anything was wrong. After all, aren't cats the guardians of the dead and the dead fear them? That's what the Mummy movies tell us.
In getting to work today, the freeways were emptier than normal. We did notice the odd car drifiting across the road, but I attributed that to just bad driver syndrom.
When we got to work, we found a pretty decent parking spot; something unusual, but we didn't even think twice about it outside of thinking "SWEET!"
It wasn't until the mid-morning that we realized something was wrong. Our office is situated on the fourth floor of a building on a hillside. I saw a mass of people coming up the hill from the local strip mall and wondered if there was a parade. But, it's not a holiday and people don't usually run screaming from a parade.
Luckily, the front doors of our lobby are locked, unless you have a badge. And, our elevators require a key AND our lobby locks and you need a badge & pin. So, for now, we're safe.
There's some food in the kitchens. There's definitely tea, coffee, assorted sodas, and water...as long as the water is still running or we still have bottled water in the fridge. We can also break into the snack machine if necessary.
I'm worried about the cats at home. There's no way to get out of here, since the garage is not attached to the buildings and we parked on a lower floor. Dammit! Why didn't I park where we could see the cars?
We have emergency packs at home, and as long as we're at home, we can jet out. But, it doesn't help since we're at work.
My collegues have set up watch along the windows and some of us are formulating strategy about getting out of here at one point. There's a contingent that thinks we're insane for even think about leaving. But we certainly can't stay here forever. The food will eventually run out, the lights & water will eventually go out. It's a slow starvation in here...that is, if they don't break down the doors or figure out the staircases.
Someone is scouring the Web for techniques on fighting zombies. Another is taking inventory of rations & water. Personally? I figure the 30 folks here could last about several weeks provided we find all the stashes of snacks and food in everyone's cube. I'm betting there's only two weeks worth of food. Three, if everyone cuts rations into 4ths. I wonder when the heat will go off?
And I don't want to die a slow death of starvation and cold. Let me go down fighting. We have "some" things that could be weapons, but not much.
We might wait a bit to see if the Zombies move onto greener pastures. That'll give us more of a fighting chance.
Luckily, communications lines are still open. Will keep folks aprised of the situation here as they progress. Plus, if we can't be found, at least you'll know what happened to us and when....
For my friends out there, we're going to try and get back to the house and get our survival packs and the cats (altho' I don't know how well that will work!) We're going go North & East.
deidremoon has posted her plans and hopefully, we'll meet up with them.
If we can't hook up, we'll head up North towards Portland, Seattle, Vancouver. I hear Zombies don't like the cold -- something about them actually freezing up from the snow -- it's worth looking into.
