I've read one of Didion's essays from Slouching Towards Bethlehem. I can't remember what it was called but it was about Haight (sp?) Street in San Francisco. Haha, that one was Slouching Towards Bethlehem. It's the essay that the book is named after. Yeah, I've walked through it, too. The amount of people in the corners of alleys just smoking or playing music and asking for money was... astounding. We all knew what the money was going to. At least one kid was amusingly honest enough to make a cardboard sign that read: I just want money for pot. That was great.
