Good plan. You don't resort to physical violence.
However, you were a victim of a hate crime - you have a responsibility to report that. Because if you don't, it just justifies in the minds of not only the old asshole, but everyone around them, to think that... hey, beating up on gays or gay supporters is not only fun, but carries no lasting consequences!
Do you want to be responsible for perpetuating hate like that?
What's done is done - I suppose since you said you reported it to the driver, you *could* follow up, but without any witnesses, nothing will happen.
Just remember that for the next asshole that does similar to you. You don't need to physically fight back, but call 911, call the media - let them fight on your behalf. Get depositions from people.
