Joe doesn’t like interviews. They make Nick tense and uncomfortable, which makes Joe uneasy, as well. They both have a tendency to sit back and let Kevin take the lead and answer the questions.

Unfortunately, most interviewers don’t see Kevin as the “interesting” brother. Nick is the musical genius, Joe is the pretty face, and the pair of them are the ones with Lunds.

“Let’s talk about your medical problems. You were diagnosed with Lunds Syndrome when Nick was born, weren’t you?”

The interviewer is a pretty blonde woman in her late twenties. She has a nice smile and manages to look interested in what they have to say. Joe likes her, for the most part.

He nods, “Our mom let me hold him right after he was born and then Dad took Kevin and I home. I don’t remember most of the night -I was only three -but I nearly died.”

“It was really horrible,” Kevin speaks up, “Dad and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Joe was just sick and kept getting sicker. Dad called 911 when he started seizing, but no one thought it was Lunds at first. They couldn’t figure it out.”

“You remain the youngest pair to ever imprint upon one another, correct?” The woman -Joe thinks her name is Linda or Brenda or something like that -turns her eyes back onto Nick and Joe.

“There was a fourteen year old diagnosed a few years before us,” Nick says because Nick knows virtually everything about Lunds, “But they didn’t think it was even possible for siblings to imprint. And, initially, Lunds pairs can stay away from one another longer at first because they subconsciously close themselves off, but children don’t do that.”

“Lunds Syndrome is very rare, isn’t it?”

Nick nods, “Yes, and rarer yet is for a male to imprint on another male. As far as we know, we’re the only siblings to ever do so.”

“How does it affect your relationship?”

Joe shifted uneasily and Nick went stiff against his side. “I’m really overprotective of Nick, but that’s a good thing. We have acute Lunds, so I can feel when something is off with him. When his blood sugar is off, I can always tell, even when he can’t.”

“Joe knew something was wrong with me, even when our parents didn’t believe him. He convinced me to go talk to a doctor and it saved my life.”

“It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s likely that my body will stop making insulin. I check my blood sugar regularly because, if it does happen, we don’t want to be blindsided thinking it’s just a phantom symptom of something Nick’s body is experiencing.”

“That sounds dangerous,” the interviewer’s eyebrows had flown up.

“Lunds Syndrome can be life threatening in certain situations. Joe and I can’t be out of contact for more than fifteen hours without having seizures and its best if we don’t spend more than eight hours apart. And if one of us is upset, that time is cut down drastically.” Nick explains, patiently like it wasn’t the hundredth time he’d done so.

“I had a panic attack once when I was thirteen. We were apparent maybe fifteen minutes, but it was like we’d been apart for hours on end. The day he was diagnosed, I passed out from the sudden stress of not having him near when I knew something was wrong. We stayed in constant contact for days. I didn’t even leave his hospital room.”

“What effect does it have on your personal lives?”

Joe shifts again, uncomfortable. “We’ve both dated, but it’s really hard to find someone who understands. Most of the girls I’ve dated get jealous of Nick, because we’re around one another so often. I remember cancelling a date once because Nick was frustrated over not getting a song right. It made my skin itch, but it was better if we were touching. The girl broke up with me, but the song went number one.”

The interviewer laughs and Kevin pushes into the conversation, turning the topic towards something safer. The back of Nick’s fingers brush against Joe’s and his whole hand tingles and he has to fight back the urge to take Nick’s hand, to lean over and kiss his slight scowl away.

Joe just doesn’t like interviews.
