I don't know, the Bible is the world all time best seller, and The Pilgrim's Progress is pretty popular still, and I think it's excellent.

I don't think Warren is as bad as Spong or Schuller, or even Osteen. There's nothing inherently wrong with church growth, presenting your congregation in a positive way, etc. The problems are more subtle than that, check out prester_scott's review here.

Bible's also the number one stolen item from bookstores... Now *there's* irony for you, as a side note. Plus, somehow I can't quite count the BIble in there... Ditto for 'The Pilgrim's Progress', and TPP is not in the same category, being a piece of literature (albeit one with a great deal of insight into the Christian life ( ... )

Actually, it sounds like me and your dad would agree on quite a few things. Really, I'm not interested in being any sort of Rick Warren apologist, so I'll just hang it up here :)

Possibly, possibly.

Quite all right. I'm not particularly interested in a drawn out discussion on it since I've never read any of his work, so all I could do is quote other people, and I hate doing that. ^_^

On a side note, since I'm on a streak of answering comments promptly for once, I'm still considering my reply to your reply to my results on the little selector quiz a couple of weeks ago. I started to reply, but then I had to stop because I realised I'd never really given the matter of church government structure any thought.

I remember that when my church did the Purpose Driven Life in small groups, I noticed several times that he used verses out of context, not to mention used 151 different translations just to get the meaning he wanted.

Isn't "The Circle Trilogy" (Black, Red, and White) by Ted Dekker on the bestseller list? Those are fantastic Christian books... Fiction, but it's all allogorious to the Bible and stuff.

And c'mon, if my upcoming book is on the bestseller list, is it gonna be garbage? :P

Nope. But don't forget that the NYT has several different lists. Our Top 20 list is the main bestseller list or however it works.

P'r'aps I should rephrase: theological works. For example: Dad needed a certain technical book, but the only place he could find it was at an online bookstore in the UK. While there, he browsed a bit and found that they sold John MacArthur's work under the section 'Christian Living', but 'A Purpose Driven Life' they sell under 'Spirituality'. See the difference? Tolkien and C.S. Lewis are both sold under either Sci-fi or Children's/Intermediates'. I don't count fiction; it's just different. Fiction doesn't claim to have an answer as to how you should live your life.

That's a really convoluted paragraph. Oh well.
