I'm pretty sure you don't need to register with Verified by Visa to use it. At least, I didn't when I bought stuff from Newegg (which uses it when available).

I certainly hope not; either that or that the reason my card is ineligible for registration is because it already is registered... Still, I think a phone call or two to put my mind at ease is in order.

I second the newegg thing. I had issues with it only when there wasn't something right with my bank. Make your phonecalls if that's what it'll take, but I'm sure the issue is fine.
