Test-drive-a-thon part 1

I like making informed decisions about most things--especially those to the tune to 15k big ones... I've been in a research/obsess marathon with trying to pick out a new econo-box to replace my aging and failing ford "ghetto salad" escort ( Read more... )

We've got the Jetta, and it's okay for its price. The gas mileage is lower because it's got more safety features for a smaller car. Seats are very comfortable for a smaller person and I LOVE the heated seats and leather interior (easier to keep clean). It has plenty of room for vacations. You can put down the rear seats and tie the trunk shut over some pretty long things like 6' ladders ( ... )

They weren't bad during the sale, but they screwed up too many times during both routine maintenance and when we had problems with the car. They had to be nagged a lot. They nagged us a lot ( ... )

I don't *want* an auto >.>a I was complaining that its all they seem to have around to test these days heheh. I haven't thought much about the diesels, haven't seen many around here for sale that aren't ancient cars. Plus diesel was more pricey here for a while (though maybe the MPG makes up that cost)... Something to consider for sure.

Here's a few of my opinions:

Toyota/Honda: Good cars. Built to last longer than American cars. Get stolen a lot, so get something anti-theft along with them. Most of the only problems I've ever had have been cheap and easy to fix. As long as you keep up on basic maintenance there usually aren't any surprises.

Mazda: I don't know many people who go with Mazda. But there is one who had the car for over 20 years.

Nissan: Resale sucks ass because they depreciate in value a seemingly by half the second they leave the lot. I haven't seen one that isn't obviously plastic in the last 10 years (at least more obviously plastic than any other car I've seen), but I did stop looking when I noticed the rate they depreciate. I've had many family members very unhappy about this. My brother-in-law's sports car was Nissan and looked like a Mc Donald's toy car. Eww.

I'm not a big fan of american cars myself, at least not the ones that sell el cheapo models like ford, chevy and the like. Old buicks are quite nice though hehe...
I hope the sports car you speak of isn't the Z, I adore that car (see previous post...) ;_;

Right now I'm really looking for good drivability that isn't stupid expensive. Unfortuntely, most el cheapo cars seem to drive like el crappo. It's depressing....

I used to love American cars, particularly years that you could still work on yourself. I had a 198(something) Chevy Malibu, the old cop cars, for my first car. I could do quite a bit in that engine. Then a 1979 Ford Faramount, straight 6. *Purr* 6 cylinders of orgasm right there.

But god, oil leaks and nickel & dime me to death later... not so much.

It's just hard to find good cars that drive like bats out of hell, last long, and don't chip your wallet right off your ass.

That tends to be my feeling about this whole price bracket i've been staring at. They move forward, but they don't stand out. Don't have soul. Guess that comes for a few thousand extra heheheh.
