Yeah, I thought of that. But I usually try to avoid them since part of their mission is "the advancement of the Christian religion." As a last resort I will consider them--I prefer Goodwill since they actually provide jobs and social interaction to people with disabilities, psych problems, etc.
1) start with big sorts ... make huge piles ... like "keep" "donate" "trash" "other" ... if you don't know just throw it in "other" and deal with it later ... every sort should be quick and to the point 2) deal with the piles you know what to do with to clear out some space and your brain 3) then take the "other" pile and break it down to smaller piles of some sort 4) rinse and repeat till there are no "other" piles
this is amazingly effective ... it keeps you moving ... and each other pile is a little easier to deal with then the last till what you have is just a few random items to be addressed ...
Thanks m'am! I've been doing that...there's just sooooo much junk. *Yawn* Bit by bit--if I work on it every weekend I should have it under control by the time we pick up the truck.
see, and here i'm just an extremist. i'd make 2 piles. and one of them i would make in a set amount of space, say 2 to 3 boxes for example. then i would fill the boxes with stuff i want to keep. everythhing else is donation bait. after taking out something to put in something better a few times you really start to see your stuff in a different light. cast it off, free yourself, start fresh... it feels wonderful, and i promiss it's not as scary as you'd think.
or even hold a garage sale before you come down, get som extra cash out of all of it. man i'd be dumping everything that wasnt an heirloom. like, dishes and pots and pans, etc, etc.... your call
Thanks for all our useful comments and support! I've been trying to do something along the same lines, and I found someone on FreeCycle to take it away tomorrow. (We can't do a yard sale b/c the condo people won't allow it) So now after a long dusty weekend there's about 7 or 8 boxes and bags in the living room ready to leave and four big bags of trash. Whew. I know there's more work ahead, but this made a big dent! I've been thinning things down with each move over the past few years, but now I'm ready to get more hard-core about it, especially since the place in Austin is much smaller than this place. And we need room for friends, not stuff!
