Oven Research

Last Friday, we had an oil spill in the oven. Sweety and I cleaned it out, but we saw how much crud was burned on to the oven and decided to run a cleaning cycle for the first time.

Smoke! Stench! New ovens with features we won't use! )

Wow. Makes me afraid to use the self cleaning cycle of my oven.

Here are some interesting commercials from years past about oven cleaning.

I think I recognize the Easy-Off jingle.

The repair guy said that self-cleaning cycles are a big problem in newer ovens. He told us that if we run a self-cleaning cycle on a new oven, we should run it for just an hour at a time. Otherwise, there's a part that can take heat damage and need replacing.

We use a liner for the bottom of the oven, and that has saved us in the past. But I think maybe I just need to cook less oily food.

Yeah, oven-cleaning is nasty.

How often do you do it? We know ours hadn't been cleaned in several years, possibly ever. I'm wondering how important it really is.
