Death Valley, part 2 of 3

Death Valley report continued, part 2 of 3.

Amazingly enough, we got up at 5am to see sunrise, despite being committed night owls (me especially). We went to Zabriskie Point, which is supposed to be "the" place for sunrise in Death Valley, and it totally was.



Since this fact is advertised all over the place, including the park literature they hand you when you get there, we were surprised that there were only a couple other people there for it. A number of other photographers showed up around 6:30 when we were leaving, and my general thought was, "You can get here this godawful early, but you couldn't be here an hour earlier for the big show? Man, you totally missed out." Admittedly, it was stunning then too, as shown below, but if you're already up that early, what's another hour?



We went for a short hike into Mosaic Canyon, a beautiful mishmash primarily of marble and breccia. The rocks were breathtaking, and we went climbing up a bit off the path to get views like this, which you won't see in the typical Death Valley pictures:
