The first Sunday of Advent has come and gone (and Robin and I have even constructed our own Advent wreath, with the purple and rose candles being ones we dipped ourselves in the driveway) and Saint Nicholas's Day will be here soon

I think you should just write whatever comes to mind. Your letter doesn't have to follow the same form or convention as your previous letters. I think your friends and family are always glad to get the letter, not because it is a great literary effort, but primarily because it is from you, and contains your thoughts and an update about what has happened in your life. I guess what I am trying to say is, in a buisy life, sometimes its okay to write short letters, just as long as you mean what you say.
I find that doing things I don't normally do always leaves me more inspired. Concerts, performances, beautiful places, the long way home, all of these get me in a more "narrative" frame of mind.
