I have been mostly away from my computer a lot lately, due to the heat, and now to escape the heat here I am going to Washington DC in July! I have to go to DC most summers for a few days for work, and I always like to tack on a day or two, to see friends and to go look at something historic. One of these days I'd like to stay for a solid few days ( Read more... )

I read a story on AfterElton about last season of SYTYCD, and how the show seemed to be trying to be more gay-friendly, criticizing more lyrical male dancers less, etc. I've really enjoyed the same-sex pairings thus far (and would love to see Lauren and Ashley paired with women too), but I do wonder if they're going to be able to choreograph a same-sex relationship routine, like, overtly. I loved the hip-hop routine, of course it was incredible, but I was so EXCITED about the potential in the African jazz routine, and I loved the opening piece from this week's results show, with Billy and Ade. Hmm. Both that piece and the African jazz were with Billy. Hmmm.

I didn't know about that After Elton story, but I'm glad to hear it - I think at times the criticism of lyrical male dancers seemed coded - and not all that secretly coded: butch up! I would love to see overtly romantic or sexual choreography for a same sex pairing but I don't think it will happen on the show (at least not with the contestants - maybe a guest performance?).

Heh, sorry, I'm from DC, and I'm just massively amused at the idea that you would ever go to DC in July to escape the heat. It is typically 95 - 100 degrees in DC in July with about 95% humidity. I'm actually going to visit my family next week, and am kind of frightened by the possible weather. Living in the Bay Area has made me soft for sure. :P

It was actually pretty great weather today - hot but not humid, a definite improvement over the past two weeks in Jersey!

Yeah, my dad told me it rained and it broke the heat a bit, but it has definitely been 100+ for most of the summer thusfar.

I know - in addition to being such a great dancer he seems like a sweetheart - such an unlucky break for him.

I love SYTYCD, but just YES to everything you posted about so much of the choreography lately - not everything has to be about a relationship. I miss Wade's crazy unique dances too. I love that they are doing more same sex pairings this year, but I wish they would stop talking about it like it's something that's never existed before! Aside from the fact that dancers dance in same sex pairs/groups in the real world all the time, they've also been doing it on SYTYCD every year since season 2. The finals always have same sex pairings and group numbers. So it's not some novel concept that they just came up with this season ( ... )
