I remember character shoes! We used them in ballet class to do character work. Ours were tap shoes but without the metal tappy part.

It's Pica. And it is a recognized symptom of Iron or some other nutritional requirement deficiency.

blurg to character shoes. win to me for never having to wear them. (woo backstage)
and i think my nerdiness is showing when i admit that i LOOOVE doing the nitpicky bits about finding cues and relationships.
my favorite thing to do was go through the play and paraphrase each line... rephrase it to say what i'm *really* saying, instead of what i actually say to other characters.
we used to use the Goal Obstacle Tactic Expectation (GOTE) thing to read into each line/scene/etc.
it also helped one show to give each beat a funny (sub)title, after breaking the show into beats.
