So we are bringing a walk-around character costume to the Science Center next year and I am in charge of making sure that we don't kill the people who are inside the costume (it has a heavy head piece that fits down over the shoulders and includes a fan in the top ( Read more... )

Dude, it has a FAN? Keep them out there for hours! We Muppets never had any stinking fans. ;)

You're pretty much right on the standard. Sesame Place always, ALWAYS made sure we had escorts/hosts. The characters never spoke. Standard "walk" length was 30 minutes with 15 minute cooldown and 15 minute dressing period (essentially, 30 in/30 out.) Sometimes we did shorter walks, but never longer.

Backstage you'll want to make sure you have fabric freshener spray, a fan for the actor, and water. Also, we were always required to wear unitards in costume, but many mascots get away with T-shirts and leggings.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, a fan, how fancy! Good call on the unitard and the fabric freshner.

I am soooooooooooo glad you have power! I am crossing every part of my body that you don't lose it again tonight.

When you get back in town we need to have a double date.

Will you please tell Dan happy birthday from Eli and I.

Kisses my dear.

hi! Tessa here. Worked for Disney.
The longest the characters are allowed inside their costume, outside, is 45 minutes. And this is outside...once it reaches 88 degrees, the sets can only be 25.
Half hour on, half hour off. That's the standard. Tell them to bring different sets of under garnments so their bodies don't over heat-if they sweat, and they continue to wear the same stuff underneath, it makes it very hard for the body to circulate it's heat proporly.
Water and powerade were always on hand.
ALWAYS a handler. Never talking!!!! Ick.
Yep! Amanda's got it down.
As for a schedule? Disney is secretly Nazi run, and they'd have us on 12 hour days EASY. Face characters could be out on set for an hour and fifty minutes, with a 15 minute break, and then back on right away. Those bums!!! But, I can smile for HOURS now ;)
