My neice just turned three a week and a day ago. Tonight, her mother posted a video of my neice on Facebook. In it, the little girl proudly shows off more than just her counting skills. In a clear, childishly pitched but incredibly articulate voice, she shows with her fingers: "One plus one is two. Two plus one is three. Two plus two is four, but

Oof. Hopefully she'll realize that it's fleeting, and will value and nurture her mind.

It's hard. I am biased, but think I have a pretty damn cute kid. I try my best to tell her how smart she is. And we had a talk the other day about how important it is to be pretty as a person and not just on the outside. But shit. I'm winging this parenting thing. I just hope we can give her a fighting chance.

And unfortunately it's hard to control the outside world. My kid never saw boy things versus girl things. Until she started preschool. The stuff she brings home. Geesh.
