Well, I don't know if this helps or not, but Facebook and LiveJournal do play complimentary, rather than competing roles. FaceBook is not really set up for the whole online journal thing. It works OK for that purpose, but not well. FaceBook is more of a fun-and-games Internet social networking/community. Metaphorically speaking, FaceBook is the dinner party where you spend the entire evening catching up a little on what everyone is doing/thinking/feeling/playing; LiveJournal is the dinner for two where you and someone else can talk at length with each other on one or more topics.

And, incidently, there is a Facebook app that allows you to note when you make a LiveJournal post, so the two can be used together.
