let me sing a sad song,
what we always listened to together―
the first time junhyung sees him, he was dancing.
crazy. junhyung thought, scowling at the other man who looked as if he was in some sort of a trance, moving his body to a silent melody in the rain, not caring about ―or not noticing― the ice cold needles coming down in sheets from the grey sky, a strange smile on his face.
junhyung had taken cover huddling by himself in an empty corner of the street, underneath a random store's flimsy overhang, mumbling to himself about why he had decided to go out and get some fresh air today of all days. all the stores were closed, the streets were deserted except for the stranger that stood spinning by himself in the middle of the road, soaking wet.
and then junhyung was soaking wet.
amidst his cursing and that went along the lines of "useless piece of plastic you're weaker than me" "why don't i have an umbrella" and "who needs fresh air, not me", junhyung heard slight giggling coming from the direction of the stranger.
"umbrellas are overrated."
―somewhere it seems you are singing the same song,
"what?" junhyung questioned over the rain as he started the long grueling process of wringing out his hat, his scarf, his shirt― there goes another 575 dolla―
hyunseung's laughter, louder this time, pierced through the rain. he skipped towards junhyung, the other gaping at him with a raised brow.
hyunseung pulled junhyung out of the overhang and into the rain just before another wave of water came crashing over. before he could comprehend what was happening, hyunseung had already resumed dancing, leaving a confused junhyung to stand gawking at the blur of red hair moving back and forth, up and down.
finally realizing he was soaking wet, cold, and familiarizing himself with a possible serial killer, junhyung flung his scarf over his shoulder and stuck his hands into his pockets and turned on his heels, ready to walk away before―
"hey, where do you think you're going?"
junhyung turned around and was met with a face full of water, a stubborn grip on his wrist, and a voice urging him to join in on the fun.
a quirk of his brow, "how can i dance? there's no music."
a laugh, "now if you were crazy like me, you'd hear it."
do you think about me like i do?
the second time junhyung sees him, he asks for his name.
do you cry for me sometimes?
"jang hyunseung." the other replies with a smile beaming, his upper lip covered in coffee foam.
and sing a sad song again,
junhyung all but nods, tapping on the edge of the glass table, nonchalantly looking out the window, admiring the small snowflakes that started to come down lightly on the streets, the morning sunlight muted by the wisps of clouds that blanketed the sky in a blue-ish gray felt.
"are you single?"
junhyung spits out his coffee and barely manages to grab a napkin and cover his mouth before hyunseung bursts out laughing, his legs kicking and knocking into junhyung's underneath the table.
"uh, i guess."
"it's a yes or no question, junhyung."
"wait how did you know my nam―"
"i'm psychic."
"psychic?"
"psychic."
"oh."
like i do now?
the third time junhyung sees him, he blushes.
you blushed. junhyung thought. you totally just blushed.
"did you just blush?" hyunseung bent down and looked up at junhyung, who was hanging his head down and avoiding eye contact.
hyunseung threw his head back and let out a loud laugh, almost tripping over his own feet and dropping his ice cream cone in the process, "you are!"
junhyung mumbled something under his breath and took a bite out of his ice cream.
"mmph, shut up. you're lucky i even met up with you this late, who wants ice cream at 2 in the morning anywa―"
"it's 1:57 and 23 seconds."
"what? close eno―"
"that's a total difference of 2 minutes and 37 seconds! that's 2 minutes and 37 seconds that you could've spent quality time with me. 36, 35, 34, 33―"
"hyunseung?"
"what?"
junhyung smirked and came close to the latter's ear.
"shut up."
hyunseung did shut up. but just long enough to tackle junhyung onto the park grass.
i sing it because my heart breaks,
but now hyunseung was gone.
i sing a sad song only,
junhyung knew he shouldn't have, he knew he shouldn't have gotten mad, shouldn't have said the words he said.
i sing it because i can't forget you,
he didn't even see the other car coming, he was too busy countering hyunseung's insults with ones of his own to see the other crazed driver speeding towards his motorcycle. he replayed the events in his head over and over, the sounds of medical equipment and rushing doctors whirred around him.
it's over―
black.
my love is goodbye,
junhyung watched helplessly behind the chaos, watched silently at two machines, one steadily ―reassuringly― beeping, the neon line weakly jolting with every shallow breath hyunseung took.
and one that didn't.
goodbye,
junhyung smiled and breathed one last word―
goodbye,
when hyunseung awoke, he could've sworn the air whispered his name.
i keep calling out your name,
and junhyung saw him for the last time.
i keep calling out your name.
