The moonlight fell across her face and slid down the waves of her hair, making her glow like an angel. It was beautiful, and it almost reminded Alex of-- if only it were snowing.
He freed one hand from the sheets and brought it gently to her lips -- petal-soft, still swollen. Her eyes fluttered open at the touch. She didn't protest, but he could feel her frown against his fingers. Then her lips parted.
"Alex," she said, in a voice so clear he wondered if she had been sleeping at all. He dropped his hand. His name hung between them like a curtain.
"You're beautiful, Mia," he told her -- begged her. Her eyes looked like reality, and he wanted to forget.
Her frown deepened. "Why are you helping them, Alex? It's wrong. You know it's wrong."
"I love you, Mia." Desperation showing through, and he hated it.
"That doesn't matter. Please, Alex. Can't you tell me why?"
He didn't answer. He looked away from her eyes, traced the contour of her bare shoulder.
"You like being on their side," she said softly, and her voice betrayed her -- she had known it all along.
"Perhaps I do," he answered; cruelly, needlessly.
She let her eyes close. "You always were a little too fond of power."
"I've tried to tell you, Mia. Power is a beautiful thing."
She sighed and moved closer to him. "Just go back to sleep."
"You're staying? What are you going to tell Isaac and the others in the morning?"
She shrugged vaguely against his chest.
Suddenly Alex felt guilty. Only for her, only for Mia, did guilt show its face. "You shouldn't. I don't-- Saturos and Menardi are trying to kill you. They're trying to kill you, and I'm helping them."
She looked up at him, smiled a little sadly, and said, "That's what unconditional love is all about."

Mia is fifteen, and she is in Alex's arms.
"I love you unconditionally. I love you unconditionally. I love you unconditionally." She murmurs it over and over into his chest, her mouth moving against his skin, until he arches into her, and then she shudders and cries and kisses him hard.
