We have to close the doors!
He is so weak. He feels naked, breached to his core, stripped of all the layers that the darkness once afforded him. His hands, torn suddenly from dark gloves, are impossibly pale and soft. Just hours ago he had been hard and fierce, a raging dark ocean, an insatiable black hole in all its cold cruelty; now, he is a feeble pinprick of light. Powerless.
He is so weak. It makes him sick.
It's so heavy... I... can't...
Utterly powerless. The heartless swarm around him, no longer his allies, and he shrinks away. He can't help anyone like this, can't do anything at all. He knows it, and it makes him sick. But still, somehow...
Don't give up!
He is pulling on the handles before he knows what he's doing, and then he is looking out through the tiny bright space between the doors. He meets Sora's eyes easily, for the first time in months; there is no horror in them, and no pity, and no fear. Instead he can see friendship, and warmth, and that small patch of pale sky that sits just above the horizon.
Then they are all pushing and pulling and straining and they are so weak; but maybe the doors are moving anyway, maybe just a little.
Close it, quick!
Behind him, the king is barely keeping the heartless back. He is powerless and small and soon he'll be alone, but somehow...
Take care of her.
The light is gone.
"Take care of Kairi," he repeats to the closed doors. Her name drops sweetly onto his tongue, like a spoonful of honey. He almost stops breathing, the taste is so different -- gone is the bitterness, gone is every trace of guilt and regret and saltwater tears. And when he listens to the sound of it echoing in the dark space, he can hear the ocean, and a girl's bright laughter.
Riku turns to face the darkness -- no longer invincible, and no longer afraid.
