Trust the U.S to take things one step further than everyone else. Watch this since I am curious to know peoples views of it ( Read more... )

I don't quite understand how they are saying it is going to affect their lives

Oh hang on, I've actually read the bottom of the page now :-D

Hmmm, the issue here is a tricky one, it's not like the advert is saying "ban same sex marriage", it's basically "stop the Government from punishing us because we don't believe in same sex marriage". And to be fair, I'm not sure why people's views on homosexuality should affect their job or whether they get tax exemptions (although it's not really explained why doctors apparently have to be on board with same sex marriage in order to keep their jobs)

So to conclude, homophobia = bad, but Government attempting to punish people for their beliefs also = bad. I think this is the wrong way to go about highlighting the issue though, as that one minute advert spot does at first glance just look like gay bashing

"The biggest problem is that people aren't making a difference between civil unions and marriage. Same-sex couples want the same legal rights as heterosexual couples; which they should. However, it should be up to the individual religion if they allow such services to take place within their property or not; in this country, if the church says no, you go to a civil office. However, the U.S does not seem to have that option (as in marriage licenses seem to be mainly based in churches). The perfect solution would be to go; you want to get married, go to this civil office here and have a ceremony, however, if your religion doesn't mind this, then have the ceremony in their church."

I agree with this entirely

And if I get a chance later, I may elaborate on that!

I had no idea it was this serious!

Who would have thought that allowing for same-sex couples to live in peace would result in people being able only to marry with same-sex partners?!

Not only that, schools teaching that same-sex marriage is okay is outrageous! I certainly don't want my kids to grow into open minded citizens.

Next thing you know, crime will be banned... we need to do something to stop this now!

Yep, it is a serious advert!

And yes, lets ban crime as well.

oh, goodie, a new cult! we haven't had one of those in a good long while

do note the mention of a 'rainbow coalition' near the end, as if highlighting that they are only looking to suppress and deny the rights of one 'minority' makes it all okay

Heh.

I thought that was ironic too since the symbol for Gay Pride here is a rainbow.

It is here as well. And I think that was an intentional use of the term, co-opting that symbol for their own. "See, we have rainbows too. We're coming together in love, to deny people who are in love the basic rights that we enjoy."
