How do you think David Sedaris got people to realize he was a good writer and not just really, really whiny?

David Sedaris is a good writer?

When did that happen?

Wait, you're critiquing this opinion, and not my desire for a Raspberry Reich t-shirt?

That's just because I have no idea what rasberry reich is, but I wasted 2 days on Me Talk Pretty One Day and I'm bitter about it.

Oh. Well, trust me, if you want faggy, preachy, and overdramatized, try watching a Bruce LaBruce movie about homosexual revolution.

I've only read his short stories, but frankly, I think he does a good job portraying how people think about things in every-day life. I don't enjoy reading him for that same reason.

Hm, that's a good question. Maybe it was his radio show that did it? All I know is that one day in the library I picked up his book because it was called "Naked", and then discovered that it was by Amy Sedaris' brother, so I gave it a try. I liked it, so I real all his other books.

I think it may be because he somehow manages to come up with a point to his essays, even when they're are none. And I think people like reading about families more dysfunctional than their own.

Where are you now? Still in Florida?

Hmm. Yeah. You might be onto something. I had this story idea that reminded me of his style, but when I started writing it down, I realized - "People are just going to think I'm a really bitchy person."

And I'm in DE, but I'll be going to NY soon.

How many people can make whiny sound so good? And the stories he tells are like bum fights-- they're awful and you'll probably never be in a similar situation, but you want to experience it if you get the chance (the writing style helps-- he's sardonically honest and makes every step amusing while still allowing you to see it from how he saw it).
