Sarah scream cut the silence
Becker raced round the corner, coming to a halt took in the scene before him. Sarah lay on the floor a predator crouched at her feet. He raised his weapon, the predator fell.
Becker ran, pulling her up into his arms, forcing himself to ignore her sharp cry of pain.
Scanning the area for somewhere to hide he spotted a small derelict building; for a moment he hesitated unsure of entering the fragile structure, but the soft sound of approaching predators and the need to get out of the open decided for him.
Laying Sarah down carefully, Becker moved swiftly to block the entrance. His radio crackled and hissed as he informed his men of their location and condition.
“Sarah, where are you hurt? ” Becker asked coming to kneel beside her.
Sarah raised a hand to touch his face.” “I’m sorry; I should have stayed with you.”
As he slowly began checking for injuries he glanced down to were her hand was tightly pressed against her side, the material of her shirt was dark and wet with blood, a growing pool was forming beneath her.
“It’ll be fine “he said “We’ll get you patched up as soon as we get out of here.”
A moment later the room shook as a predators tried to force its way in, showering them in dust and small pieces of plaster. He glanced towards the door reassured himself that his barricade was holding.
“They’re not going to stop are they?” Sarah voice was low, filled with fear and pain.
“Backup will be here soon. We’ll be fine “
He reached to push her hair from back from her face, clamping down the fear he felt, when he realised felt how cold her skin was beneath his fingers. The building shook groaning in protest as once more the predators tried to gain entry.
“I’m not sure I can wait “her voice seemed fainter.
“No.... you’re going to be fine. We’ll be out of here in no time”
Suddenly a cracking sound above them heralded another shower of rubble as the room began to crumble under the sustained attack. Becker threw himself forward to cover Sarah with his body as the walls came down, descending them into darkness.
Gradually every thing became still. Becker managed to roll to lie beside Sarah. He reached for his radio but was met with silence.
“Sarah?” For a long moment there was no response, then as he reached out to touch the form next to him a hand touched his, closing his hand round hers, as he tried to think of something reassuring to say.
“It’s not your fault, you do understand that. I knew the risks when I decided to come.” Sarah voice shook determined to make the point.
“Shh… you need to take it easy” Becker pulled her shivering body against his; putting a hand over her injured side hoping to slow the bleeding “
Sarah curled closer laying her head on his shoulder trying to get warmer.
“Will they come?” Sarah said suddenly “Backup I mean. Will they try a rescue?”
“Yes “ he tried to sound certain for her , but deep down he knew if there were too many predator or the anomaly showed any sign of becoming unstable they would have to withdraw.
They lay together in the darkness, only occasional movement or soft murmur of pain against his chest reassured him that Sarah was still with him.
“What’s you name?”Sarah voice broke the silence.
“What?” the sudden question caught him off guard.
“Your name, what’s your name?”
“You know my name”
“I don’t know your first name, no one does or at least no one I’ve asked “
“You’ve asked” the question seemed surreal given the circumstances.
“So what’s first name?”
“Why?” his voice was laced with suspicion.
“I want to know, come on it can’t be that bad”
“Hilary” he muttered.
“What did you say?”
“It’s Hilary…happy now”
“Yes thank you” even though her voice was now barely more than a whisper, Becker could hear her smile.
“You’re a good friend Hilary Becker, I’m glad you’re here.”
Becker wished he could see her face, as he felt her rub her head gently against his shoulder. They lay once more quietly in the cold darkness; time crept slowly on. Gradually Sarah became still.
A torch light broke the darkness. A hand reached out to touch the still forms in front of him.
“guv” A soft welsh voice inquired “you ok”
Becker stirred, a hand shook his shoulder
“Bran?”Becker said, his thoughts felt slow, confused as he tried to work out where he was.
“Yes guv. Do you think you can move?”
Becker tried to stretch muscles which were rigid with cold.
“I think so “
“Ok if I shift sidewise. Do you think you can yourself get through the tunnel we dug?”
Becker nodded slowly,
“Sarah” Becker said suddenly
Bran hand had already brushed against the still form next to his captain and he was already aware of the painful truth.
“I’ll take care of her don’t you worry. Go on get out of here ...the Lieutenants waiting; we should have been back hours ago”
Becker began his slow crawl out, leaving the young soldier alone in the small space.
Bran placed a gentle hand on sarah body.
“I’m sorry we didn’t get here sooner. May your spirit find peace” Bran reached up to key his mike
” Lieutenant, Captain's on his way out. Probably best to get him home sharpish. ”
“Dr Page?”
Bran was silent for a moment.
“Damn “the Lieutenant swore “How’s the captain taking it “
“Not sure, shocked, confused, but he’s half way to hypothermia if you ask me.”
“Ok I’ll see he’s checked. Can you retrieve her?”
“Yes”
Lester looked up as Becker entered his office.
“I was told you were spending the night in the infirmary. Is there a reason you’re cluttering up my office.”
Becker laid an envelope on the desk in front of Lester.
“I’m am responsible for the death of Dr Page and wished to resign my position.”
“Dr Page was aware of the risks involved. Unless you deliberately placed the Doctor at risk, I cannot see that you are responsible. “
“Even so, I’m sorry “Becker turned and quickly left.
Lester stared at the envelope on his desk then beyond to the young Captain as he walk slowly toward the main floor of the ARC head bowed. For a moment he allowed his head to fall into his hands, and then he opened the personal file of Dr Sarah Page and began to type. Everything he sure was about to change.
