A view from the other side.
Decaying buildings towered around them. Sarah stared around at this lost broken world. Becker stood a few feet away, talking softly to the soldiers as they searched the surrounding buildings. Hoping to find some trace, anything that might lead them to find what had happened to Abby, Conner and Danny.
A flash of colour along the street caught her attention, leaving Becker she began to walk towards it. Stopping by a crossroads she glanced around. Becker was still talking on his radio. Down the streets to her left she again saw the flash of colour, a shape moving trace away hugging close to the building making it difficult to see clearly .Curiosity got the better of her and she began to follow down the street
Movement from a nearby building was her only warning as a pain ripped through her side. She screamed. Falling as the predator now in front of her tensed to spring, for moment time felt frozen then it fell.
Suddenly she was pulled into strong arms. Closing her eyes against a wave of agony she fought to stay conscious.
Sarah felt herself being carried then lowered gently on to the floor .Opening her eyes she realised she was in small dimly lit room. Becker had moved away and she could hear the sound of object being dragged and the low murmur of his voice as he spoke to the soldiers outside.
The burning in her side was fading, being replaced with growing sense of numbness and cold.
*Shock* a part of her mind offered.
Carefully she placed her hand over the source of fading pain, her shirt felt wet beneath her hand, warm liquid rising between her fingers.
Her mind screamed
*this isn’t good...I’m bleeding too fast*
Panic rose, the urge to scream and cry at what was happening was overwhelming
Footsteps approaching broke the through the impending panic making her look up.
Becker came across the room, his face a mixture of worry and guilt. Kneeling beside her he reached out his hand.
*he’s blaming himself*
Suddenly she felt guilty, for wandering off, for not doing the only thing asked of her when this mission had begun.
Stay close that all he’d asked
“Sarah, where are you hurt? ” his eyes held concern, but he forced a smile Raising her arm she gently ran her fingers against his face trying to sooth the worry she saw in his eyes.
“I’m sorry; I should have stayed with you.”
She felt him run his hand over her skin checking for injuries, he froze; for a second his eyes were fixed on her side. Looking up he met her eyes, he smiled.
“It’ll be fine; we’ll get you patched up as soon as we get out of here.”
A moment later the room around them shook, showering them in dust.
Fear resurfaced. Only Becker calm presence prevented her panic.
“They’re not going to stop are they?”
“Backup will be here soon. We’ll be fine “he reassured her reaching out to brush back the hair from her face; she raised a small smile at the gesture.
The building shook again groaning in protest as the predators tried to force their way in.
The cold which had begun in her side, seem now to be spreading across her body bringing with it a strange calm detachment.
*I’m dying...*even this thought failed to raise her earlier panic
“I’m not sure I can wait “
“No.... you’re going to be fine. We’ll be out of here in no time “again he tried to reassure her
Cracking sound above them heralded a shower of rubble. Becker weight was suddenly on her as he covered her with his body. The walls came crashing down, throwing them into darkness.
Becker weight lifted as he managed to roll sideways
The dust settled, the enclosed space echoed.
“Sarah?” Becker voice sound loud in the darkness
Reaching out she found his hand.
Suddenly she knew if she was going to die here, she needed to make sure he understood that he was not to blame.
“It’s not your fault, you do understand that. I knew the risks when I decided to come. “Her voice shook with effort, but she had to make him understand.
“Shh… you need to take it easy” he reached and pulled against his and covering hers.
Laying her head on his shoulder, She felt his warmth soak through her.
“Will they come...Backup I mean? Will they try a rescue?”
For a moment she was afraid again, Not for herself but foe Becker, who would she feared soon be trapped in the dark, alone.
“Yes “he sounded certain.
They lay together in the darkness
Sarah to think of something to say, something to reassure him he wasn’t to blame; it was hopeless no matter what she said he would blame himself. A sudden thought occurred.
“What’s your name?”
“What?”
Her question had broken through whatever dark thoughts had been running through his head.
“Your name, what’s your name?”
“You know my name” she smiled slightly at the hint of confusing in his tone. At least he wasn’t brooding now.
“I don’t know your first name, no one does or at least no one I’ve asked “
She’d like him, almost since she met him
She’d asked Abby and Conner about him, they said he’d replaced another Captain but they didn’t seem to know anything else about him. Other enquires had lead to similar dead end. She meant to ask him for a drink, but everything had gone to hell.
“You’ve asked” now sounded indignant
“So what’s first name?”
“Why?”
*if I’m going to die... I like to know at least something about you...*
The cold was spreading again; her only warmth was wear her head rested on Becker chest. Every breath seemed harder than the last.
“I want to know, come on it can’t be that bad “she tried to keep her tone light.
“H...y” muttered Becker.
“What did you say?”
“It’s Hilary…happy now”
“Yes thank you” her voice barely more than a whisper she smiled.
“You’re a good friend Hilary Becker, I’m glad you’re here.”
*I think I could have loved you*she thought but knew it would be cruel to say such a thing now.
For a moment she was pleased, that the darkness hid her face.
She rubbed her head gently against his shoulder. Not sure if she was taking comfort or giving it. They lay quietly once more.
Darkness fell.
