So, it's been illegal to possess a handgun in Washington D.C. for the last thirty years. In spite of this fact, Washington D.C. still managed to become known as the murder capital of the United States during the 90s. Part of the trick with DC is that it's so tiny, and just across the river from Virginia, a state with some of the most lax firearms laws in the country. Anyone in DC who really wants a gun can take a 20 minute Metro ride to Arlington and get one.

If only for that reason, I doubt the homicide rate will rise much, if at all. The kind of people who want to use guns to do bad things have probably never given much thought to the gun ban, so nothing changes for them.
