That's true; the foundation of Gwen/Arthur love is not strong; it just sort of happened kinda out of the blue. Just a couple interactions in the ending epis of S1 and the first epis of S2 and suddenly we get this everlasting love stuff.
Yeah that's kind of annoying because I really like Gwen, they could have developed her character more. I didn't see enough of her being queenly, and that one time she picked up a sword this season Arthur had to save her anyway. :( She was better developed in season 1 than she has been recently as Arthur's love interest.
I didn't mind the episode because dramatically it was well done. But. The Arthur/Gwen meant to be is, frankly, in the way. I see it as the producers/writers having had two choices. 1. Ignore the canon story or 2. Go with it. Instead, they created a new canon with Merlin roughly the same age as Arthur and with them sharing a strong bromance (yes, the potential for straight romance is blatant) and then it's like the writers woke up and ... whoops. What about Guinevere? She's supposed to become the Queen. So they shoehorned it into place.
But without the setup. And without the actors having the chemistry to pull it off. It feels flat and off.
I watched the episode that followed this one. And honestly when Gwen was mentioned I was like 'who?'
