From a strictly animalistic and evolutionary perspective, it's in men's own interest to fertilize as many females as possible to increase his chances of more offspring in the next generation. There are plenty of examples of monogamous male animals, but by and large men sleep around in the animal kingdom for this reason.
Females, on the other hand, typically choose men who are the healthiest and most fit they can get to increase the odds that the children born to HER will have a good chance of surviving. And, again, exceptions are always available. A good one would be ground squirrels in Africa, where the males have developed giant balls and whose sperm are very competitive in the vagina of the promiscuous females.
How true these are for humans is, obviously, debatable.
