Most of the folks I know are experts at video games, and very, very, very little else.

I think I'm an expert at drinking and playing video games. I can't think of anything else I've invested 10,000 hours in that isn't something that's necessary for life.

I can think of something else I bet you've spent that much time on - reading. And while it might seem not much of an accomplishment, think how hard reading is to someone who hasn't done it all their lives.

I've got mastery in sewing and cooking, as well as 10 years in archery, which isn't the same as 10K hours most likely but it's pretty darn good.

What does master in drinking get you? More discerning taste buds I'd think.

The sister of a friend had a similar realization. She says she was always taught to believe she could accomplish everything she wanted. Then she got out into the world and discovered that no, you can't do everything, you have to make sacrifices. You can't be an astronaut AND a ballet dancer AND write best-sellers on the side and expect to be good at all of them.

More people need to know about the 10k hours.
