To avoid drowsiness, went all day yesterday with only a couple aspirin to tide me over. Pain was very manageable, and I got my work done in a timely fashion. I cut my cast off last night, at the 5-day mark after surgery. The injury to my leg is interesting: the scar (about 4 inches long) is not stitched at the surface, but instead the wound has ( Read more... )

I had the brace on full-time for so long, only taking it off very carefully to clean my would (and occasionally, myself) and once so coco_b could clean the foam pads which were getting pretty nasty. So I can definately relate to your desire to get the cast off (although at 5 days, I think you are just being bitchy... I had to wear the brace for like 3 months).

Why did you cut the cast off yourself? Was it just to save yourself a trip to the doctor, or did you remove it early against medical advice?

I was amazed at how the area of injury (and surgery) on my leg didn't necessarily relate to the area of discomfort/pain during my recovery...

Doc said it only had to be on for 5 days, and I was feeling really good about the pace of my recovery, so I cut it off. It wasn't a fiberglass cast, just gauze and plaster, so I didn't need a dremel or anything to remove it, just a pair of scissors and my leatherman. Everything so far has matched the timeline my Orthopedist outlined for my recovery, which means I'll likely be on the crutches for 2 or 3 more days (the leg can bear weight quite well already, but is too swollen to fit in a shoe, and sudden impacts still hurt a lot), and then I'll be B-Boy limpin' for a few more days while I get used to walking again.

my incisions from the surgery in June were stitched on the inside and glued shut as well. It was quite amazing. The healing time with the sterry-strips was great, and the movement they allowed were a lot better. I was walking within 1 day, although it was uncomfortably painful due to the tissue movement internally.

Glad to see you're making progress though. The discomfort from the lack of the cast will only last a day or two until your pain tolerance gets regulated. Hopefully you'll be good for bowling soon =p
