I realized the other day that I'd neglected to update this journal for far too long. A whole lot happened in the interim, and most of it was fun, but don't expect any details other than the few that managed to stick in my brain. Which basically means that all you get is details on travel and moving ( Read more... )

Flying becomes even more attractive on trips greater than 400 miles once you factor in fuel... My car gets about 350-400 miles per tank, and it is costing 40-50 bucks (local vs. highway fuel prices) to fill it, so you figure you are going to spend at LEAST $100 on fuel during the trip, plus tolls, plus TIME and frustration, plus safety (6+ hours on the road increases the likelyhood of an accident from fatigue or inattention).

Flight can be frustrating, but driving long distances sucks... Although, I guess if you had unlimited time, a long road trip could be fun, but as long as you can just take days and days to casually do it. Unfortunately, going home for a long weekend doesn't really afford you that opportunity.

You're very right about the cost of road travel; ROC -> PWM is usually cheaper by plane. For me, time spent traveling is time wasted - traveling is what I do in between living my life at either end of the trip. This isn't the case with a leisurely road-trip, but that's not the kind of vacation I'm able to take. Another thing about flying is the ability to make use of the otherwise wasted time by reading, etc - not something I can do on a solo drive. Bringing a book along also helps deal with the frustration of delayed flights, etc.

Brandreth (4.5 to 5) hours is about as far is I am willing to drive these days,

COmbined with work and personal travel, I now get the benfits of a lot of travel rewards. Hertz number 1 gold rules. you can get out of an airport and driving in minutes.

Hey, if you want to get picked up at the airport, you might want to be more specific than "around noon".

I was planning on calling you when I'm on the ground in MD. Barring any delays, you can expect my arrival 12:17pm.
