I got rear ended yesterday during lunch. There was a stroller in the road, the car in front of me stopped, I stopped, the fellow behind me definetly did not. Okay, the car will be messed up and my coworker and I'll have back issues.

Big question though - what kind of car do I get?

Toyota Corolla would be the way to go, they last forever and are still good looking (if you get something in the 90's or later design).

Sux about the accident. Are you only getting $1000 because that's the value of your van? This could possibly be a blessing in disguise with better gas milage and like you said, easy to maintain (minus the back problems).

No, the van's worth about $1800,

I just want to pocket the rest - I still got a ways to go (think passive income > 1500/ month) before I'll allow myself to get a car as a toy and not out of necessity.

But, I'm getting a rental car for the next two weeks.

And yes everyone thinks it's a blessing in disguise, granted.
