Hmm

Ok, so today i'm talking to my mom on the phone and we're talking about how weird the weather is. And she starts scoffing at Global Warming. She says "It's not real, right?" And I froze. The idea of not believing in Global Warming shocked me. And the scary thing is that it's not like my mom's the only one ( Read more... )

In my limited experience, I've found that especially religious people tend not to believe that global warming is real because they cannot accept the idea that God would allow them to harm the planet. They simply do not believe that humans have the power to cause a change on such a massive scale, because humans aren't supposed to be that powerful. I'm not sure if this fits your mom's situation, though.

I think a lot of people out there just don't want to admit that Al Gore was right. :)

There are a lot of older skeptics who remember the hype around global cooling a generation ago and think that this too shall pass. Not wanting to look like they took part in a silly fad once it's proven wrong could be the draw.

See, I think a lot of people don't "believe" in it because it's too damned scary to admit to ourselves that we have caused this huge problem. The solution isn't easy or even readily available, and everything that gets suggested is a pretty big lifestyle change. If we don't work on it, we may have caused our own extinction. I think most folks just go into denial rather than face the full reality of things.

Anyway, cheery morning post :) Interesting stuff...
