I got an e-mail last night from a new friend I made and she made a lot of sense in it about my eagerness to go help and the pros and cons about it

no one would think any less of you because if you went it would be as a volunteer. it's not like you are avoiding a duty. I don't understand your reservations about carrying a rifle. I don't think you would be carrying one just to point at people but having one puts you in a higher position of authority and american or not that is all some people will respect or listen too. I carry my rifle hoping that I don't have to use it. but if it comes down to protecting me or the guys in my unit then I'll have to. I'm in my second tour but I don't think I've seen near as much as you have so maybe all I'm saying is just out of ignorance. There are a lot of people here though that will support you no matter what path you take. the only opinion that really matters is yours and how will james feel.
Many of us agree, here. You make a decision that is totally yours for your own reasons. If you go, our prayers are with you and everyone else in the same position. If you stay, none of us could blame you. You've put in more time than most for our country. You'd have nothing to feel guilty about.
I'm choosing to stay with my family and volunteer in the place of those who have left. We cannot run the OR's in our smaller areas as most of the staff felt like you and were called away to help out on the Gulf Coast. Rather than watch our hospitals close and people in this area go without their medical needs being met, those of us who can are volunteering here. We don't have to be on the front lines to make a difference.
Hey there! I saw you on Vanessa's journal. I'm totally feelin' your icon. LOL. Seriously.
I don't know much about you, but you sound like a great guy for wanting to go to a third world country and help :) I've been considering joining the Peace Corps for a while, but I don't know...
you know, I don't think I will join the Peace Corps (i should have done it younger) but I will work for some emergency response department... or even docotrs without borders or any international organization like that.
