I don't understand

Nov 08, 2005 12:00

I have a math class in which the professor has this quirky little rule that if your cell phone goes off, you have to tell a story for the class. For a second or third offense, you have to sing and act something out ( Read more... )

I don't know exactly how you feel....but I do hate when someone mentions 9-11 as a way to mark a certain point in their lives. "Oh right, I went there before 9-11"...like it was a holiday or something. It's just insensitive.

And I can't stand talking about it. If I was in your position, and that airhead went "OH ALEXIS why don't you tell us about how your cousin died on 9-11?" I'd hate her guts. My situation is very different than yours, obviously, but being traumatized by seeing death and destruction builds a wall between you and other people when a discussion heads in that direction. It's not polite and not a subject that should be thrown center stage....and I don't care what these other people have to say, the girl is a FUCKING retard. Shes probably never even held a gun, let alone...point it at someone. God, ignorant and rude people are of the worst kind...

I think your criticism of people and their connection to 9/11 is a little harsh. Sadly, all Americans were affected that day and I can understand why people mark that event as a dividing point in their lives. I doubt many people see 9/11 as a "holiday." Like Pearl Harbor or Kennedy's assasination, it was a defining moment in American history and an event that continues to reverberate with consequences in our personal lives and in society as a whole.

It sounds like you had a deeper connection to 9/11 than most, and because of that it affects you stronger than most. For this reason, I suspect you consider that day a defining moment in your life as well and would never, ever consider it a holiday.

My criticism towards people who are completely insensitive is harsh -- I don't run into many, but there are people out there who never even think twice about what they're saying..whether or not it's hurtful.

I'm not going to sit here and try to convince you about something I'm sick of explaining -- people are just dumb, and I'm just done dealing with it. And good one in catching that I have 'a deeper connection' with 9-11-- I lost family.

Being curious is one thing -- he said he told her his story in strict confidence after pestering him [which was probably annoying in the first place], and whether it had been about his time in Iraq..or just a secret...the idiot blurted it out in front of the entire class. He isn't show and fucking tell.

Back when I was in the Air Farce, the lifers would occaisionally come up with stories for all us kids. Mostly it was weird stuff that happened in Vietnam, anecdotal things about going on Buffalo hunts in an AC-130 (literally, hunting water buffalo that were used as booby trapped couriers) or watching the war happen on one side of the base, while the other side was secure.

Personally, if I ever happen to be lucky enough to be in a social situation with you I would much rather hear about what happened in Brazil, sounds like much better fodder for stories to me.
