Ah ... unless you go all retro, and believe in a pantheon of GODS. Then you can have some lazy ones, some evil ones, some benevolent ones. And lots of stuff can happen without godly intervention, but some random stuff can. It's a most convenient belief system, and I'm surprised it's gone out of style.
