The thing that gets me is the hubris of them substituting their opinion for what God's. If God is all-powerful, and if gays exist, then doesn't it follow logically that God allows gays to exist?

There were demonstrations back when MA started allowing same-sex marriage, and I remember seeing a sign that said "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." I've been puzzling about it ever since. Who do they THINK made Steve? They think God screwed up? Why would they believe that in the face of the evidence that Steve exists?

Sure, but that doesn't mean god approves of them existing.

It is no less hubris to claim that you know god loves all people than to claim that you know that god hates some people.

The existence of an all powerful god does not require the existence of a reasonable or rational god. But perhaps god is rational and it turns out that humanity is more to his liking when they have groups to oppress and discriminate against. Or, as the Westboro people likely believe, God (though omnipotent) grants people the freewill to do that of which he disapproves and when they do so they suffer the consequences. Or maybe the 9 year old is right. But there is no more evidence for that than that the Westboro people are right (since, if the existence of gays means god likes gays, then does not the existence of homophobia mean that god likes homophobia?).

"God is great and kind" is just as vacuous as "God is mean and petty."

I'll certainly grant you your central premise regarding the vacuity of any statement purporting to comprehend and interpret the mind of God.

Have you ever seen that little youtube clip about exploring the 10th dimension? I think of God as a being that exists on the 11th dimension. It encompasses all things. It is not understandable to human minds.

Will you grand me the vacuity of that statement as well? The vacuity is not in claiming to comprehend or interpret the mind of god but in claiming to know any attribute of a thing for which there is no evidence of existence.

But sure, I'm willing to consign god to a meaningless concept if that makes everybody happy.

That's become one of my favorite responses now - "...and this being is worthy of worship, why?"

I firmly believe we will eventually win the war against god with our technology. Our advantage is that we exist.

Untrue, because god always retreats into the mysteries of what we don't yet know. I suspect there'll always be something we don't know and someone will point a finger knowingly and say "there! that's where god resides!"

That god is a slippery one.
